Rev. Mark Morrison-Reed on The Selma Awakening

This event has been CANCELLED! Read the note from Rev. Herndon: www.facebook.com/groups/UUPittsburgh/permalink/1027236134069466

Later this month Rev. Mark Morrison-Reed will be at First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh to present The Selma Awakening: How the Civil Rights Movement Tested and Changed Unitarian Universalism.

Given Unitarian Universalism's uneven engagement in race relations, it was not the most natural thing in the world for so many Unitarian Universalists to rush to Selma. Why did they go and what role did they play? Why, after Selma, was Unitarian Universalism unprepared for Black Power? And why is becoming more diverse still a struggle? Mark Morrison-Reed, the foremost historian of the African-American experience in Unitarian Universalism, will share his reflections, answer questions, and introduce attendees to his book The Selma Awakening as well as the meditation manual Voices from the Margins and the Unitarian Universalist history told in Darkening the Doorways: Black Trailblazers and Missed Opportunities in Unitarian Universalism.

When: Thursday, October 27 at 7pm
Where: First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh, 605 Morewood Ave in Pittsburgh
